Prevention....not just a magazine.

I'm not a doctor, or a nurse, just a layperson with lots of experience. I've always loved to learn new things, especially regarding health—trial and error kind of things.

Years ago, I used to pick up the "Prevention" magazine on the grocery store rack. Even though I've struggled with obesity most of my life, I wanted to learn how to do better. Over the last 15 years, I have managed to lose 60 pounds and have kept it off. I did that with exercise, a Keto diet, and intermittent fasting. Over the last five years, I lost weight, but gained a lot of knowledge and understanding about weight loss and health by following Dr. Eric Berg. He's impressed on me the importance of preventive measures—one of the most important concepts being intermittent fasting. For me, intermittent fasting has been one of the most critical factors for keeping the weight off. Because of the years of abuse of sugary treats, I struggle with my insulin levels getting too high. The Keto diet (low carb) and intermittent fasting have helped me to stay in the lower range of insulin levels.

If you're interested in starting Intermittent fasting, it's best to start slow and gradually fast for longer lengths of time. For example, if you eat 3 meals a day with two snacks, you can start by cutting out all snacking, especially not eating after dinner. Then, you can get into a pattern of 14-16 hours fasts with an 8-hour eating window. It's ideal to go at least 4 hours after waking up before your first meal, but it may be difficult to achieve with work schedules. So you can try eating your last meal of the day earlier. I try and stop eating by 5:30 pm and then wait until 8-9:00 a.m. to eat my first meal of the day.

To take it to the next level, you can go to two meals per day. Don't worry, you won't die! Then you would have 20 hours of fasting with a four-hour eating window. There are a lot of health benefits that come with longer fasts, and the pounds come off doing that.
